Origins of Vitalica

Brassica plants are unusual in that they have been bred so that every part of the plant - roots, leaves, heads stems and seeds are edible. This has led to a complicated set of cultivated types of a single species. Brassica plants include: cauliflower, broccoli, radish, rhubarb, mustard, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, turnips, collards, kale, kohlrabi, rutabagas just to mention a few.

Brassica oleracea has been cultivated in the Mediterranean region from about the middle of the first millennium BC. The Greeks and Romans were the first civilizations to grow cabbages for food. There seems to have been multiple areas of origin of Brassica oleracea cultivars - it is believed that most of the different types originated in Western Europe, closer to the wild species distribution, and spread to the east where cauliflower and broccoli originated. Numerous Brassicas have been used for medicinal purposes since 4000 BC.
